Monday: Welcome : )
Intro - Hello, about me, the lab and the program.
Any graphic design 2 students in here?
Read the syllabus
Notes - This is a note taking place.
Take notes that cover all software techniques you learn in class. There is WAY to much to try to remember in your class. I will grade these regularly. You can use your notes for any tests or quizzes.
Read or watch all links. Links are underlined red text.
Online Website - Almost everything you do in class will be put on your Weebly website for critique and grading. We will go over how to do this in class. If you don't want your site to be able to be found on the internet I will show you how to do that.
Be sure to write down your user name and password somewhere. If you forget them you will need to rebuild the site - not fun.
Sample Here
Click here to get a Weebly account.
Setting up your site:

Assignment Page: Click HERE
DOW Page: Click HERE
Calendar Page: Click HERE
Website Requirements - I want your navigation set up exactly this way: Assignments, DOW's (Designs Of the Week), Calendar and Portfolio. We will go over how to do this in class. Your site address should be: firstnameLastnamegd1.weebly.com. Example: johnsmithgd1.weeble.com. If that name is taken see me for help. If you don't want your website to be searchable I'll show you how to set it up that way. No illegal images on your website. You can't use pictures from the internet (except research ideas). They do not belong to you. This is a professional website, not a personal website. It is a place for me to evaluate what you are learning and potential employers or colleges to see what you are capable of.
Graphic Design Reel - Check it out : )
Intro to Graphic Design Applications - You will be using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign this semester.
Photoshop will mostly be used for image manipulation. It is primarily a raster program. You will use this program to crop, color correct, re-size and combine images.
Illustrator will be used to create vector artwork as well as designing single page projects. Raster vs Vector - Read it.
InDesign will be used to make multi-page documents like magazines, electronic and print books. You will combine things you have worked on in Photoshop and Illustrator in InDesign.
Check this out - super cool!

Ray Gun (Design Of the Week) Write at least 25 words describing what you do or don't like about the design. Use at least 2 of the design terms from the list below. The more terms you use and understand the smarter you will get. Include a copy of this picture with your critique. Make the picture about 2 inches wide. Put it in the DOW section of your website. Due at the end of next week.
We will do this first one together in class. Example HERE. Don't copy it.

Week 2 - Feb 4 - 8
Please don't work ahead. I sometimes change the assignments or provide additional information. The only week that won't change is the current one.
Monday:
A question about early printers came up last week. This is how they made posters, flayers, and anything else that needed to be mass produced.
Give it a watch.
Give it a watch.
People don't usually use Photoshop for text and shapes, BUT, a lot of times people don't have Illustrator or InDesign. When you have the choice you would usually use those programs (like we will for most assignments in class).
Photoshop for graphic design: You need to be able to:
Make a new document (8.5 x 11 inches, 250 ppi)
Use the zoom tool
Understand how layers work
Crop photographs
Manipulate text (family, style, size, color, leading, kerning, tracking
Make boxes
Make lines
Exercise: Make a new document 8.5 x 11, 250 ppi in Photoshop. Add a picture that is 5x4 inches (also 250ppi). Place the name of the object at the top with a colored box behind it. Put some body text (gibberish) below the picture. We will do the first one together. Do 2 more. Use a different picture for each. Experiment with different font families, sizes, leading kerning tracking, etc.
Graphic Design Info.
The goal is to communicate a message. Everything in the design should help to communicate the message. If something is distracting from the message, don’t include it. If something is distracting from the message, don’t include it. If something is distracting from the message, don’t include it. Yes I meant to write that 3 times : )
Leading, kerning, tracking info.
Thursday:
Concepts to learn: Using the type tool, using the character panel, font family, style and size, leading, kerning and tracking, changing colors and opacity, rotating objects, using layers, making lines and shapes.

Sampling colors, deleting solid colored backgrounds behind images, making colored backgrounds in Photoshop.
Magazine Cover Assignment - Due next Friday
Find a magazine cover on line. Completely redesign it using the same "copy". Your cover design should look nothing like the original. YOU NEED TO HAVE AT LEAST 40 WORDS ON THE COVER!
Make the document 8.5 x 11 inches, resolution, 250ppi. Add 1/2 text safe guides around each edge. Add these guides to every assignment this semester.
Your design must include a picture. Be sure to crop it. It CAN fill the entire page, but it doesn't need to. Vary the color, size, font families, etc. You CAN use boxes and lines. Design with what you know. Look on the web for design ideas. Don't COPY other designs, just use bits and pieces of ideas.
Design grading rubric HERE.
Watch these videos for magazine cover info. BEFORE you start your design.

Put this assignment on your Weebly site. Also put the original magazine cover that you got the copy from with it. Turn on the light box option and label it: Designed by your name. As with all assignments, if you finish, make another copy and try different things. Art isn't like math. There is more than one right answer. If you have time keep trying new things. The more you design, the better designer you will be.

Cool quote: "I would show my graphic design jobs to my mother, and she would always say the same thing: “That’s nice dear.” And then she would say, “Did you write it?” or “Did you do the drawing?” or “Did you take the pictures?” I’d always answer “no,” then I realized the problem. My answer was then, “I made this happen. It’s called design.”

Rotated Text Assignment (optional if you are NOT caught up) 1: Put this on your Assignment page on your website. Name it Rotated Text Assignment 1.
Only do this if you are caught up. If you are caught up you HAVE to do it.
Take facts about you: name, age, birthday, address, favorite color, height, hobbies, etc.
Arrange them on 45 or -45 degree angles. Only 45 or -45 degree angles. No 90 degree or other angles. Use different size and weight text. Use the same font family. Use different styles. No lines or boxes. No color, just use black. Be creative. Make it 6 x 6 inches. 250ppi.

You CAN use boxes boxes in your design. No color, just use black for text or boxes. You CAN experiment with opacity (to make gray).Be creative. Make it 6 x 6 inches. 250 ppi.
If you have a design or image that has white on the edges you need to place a border around it (not the skateboards, make the white, clear). The white background bleeding into the white background of your web page does not look good.
Weebly can easily do this for you.
Import the design or photo into your Weebly page. Select the image to bring up the image editing options. Make sure Lightbox is on. Click on ADVANCED. Select a border and border color. Experiment to find the combination that works best for your design.
Example: No border on the left (bad) border on the right (good)

Snowman Assignment
Tips: To use the snow brush: Select the brush tool. click on WINDOW on the top of the screen. The brush panel will pop up. In the brush panel select the preferences (little lines at the top right of the brushes panel), go to: Open brush library, then Decorative, then Decorative scatter. The snowflake brush is at the bottom of the brushes. Click on it. Paint with the brush. You should see a sea of snowflakes.
To make the bottom snow, use the blob brush. To trim it you have 2 options:
1 - use a clipping mask. Put a rectangle over the part you want to keep.Select the rectangle, select the snow (both need to be selected). Go to: object, clipping mask, make. Bingo.
2 - when you export it as a jpeg (FILE, EXPORT), be sure the "Use Artboards" box is checked. It will only save the stuff that is in the artboard. This will go on your website in the assignment section. The title will be: Snowman. Caption it: Designed by "your name".

Hierarchy/Grid Poster - Due Thursday next week - Get a visually interesting photo from the internet. Add words that describe it. On the one I did I Googled , "facts about cows". Place them using everything you have learned the last couple of weeks. Use different angles, weights, colors, sizes, shapes. lines, transparency, etc., to add visual interest and control what is read first, second, third etc. Leave some negative space. Use a grid. Don't use too many techniques in this assignment. Pick and choose the ones that create the best design. Only use techniques you now know. Make it letter sized. Make a folder for the assignment. Put any pictures you are using and the IA file in the folder BEFORE you place the images. Create four layers: Type, Images, Shapes, Background. Type would be on top, Background on the bottom.
This should look nothing like my design.
Some color theory info HERE.
Put this in the assignment section of your website. Name it Hierarchy/Grid Poster
Things I will look for when grading this:
Can I easily read the text? The whole point of GD is communicating a message.
Is it a good quality image (high enough resolution). Try to have the small side at least 1000 pixels.
Are elements lined up using a grid?
Do the colors work well together?
Have you used leading, kerning, and tracking as well as you can?
Are you using the best fonts for your design? The correct size? Body text should USUALLY be 12pts. Don't make text smaller than that. You can make some of the text larger.
Does your hierarchy make sense? Do I read the most important thing first? Second most important thing second, etc.
Does this look professional? Like something a professional designer would have done.
Does it have layers?
Does it have a folder with assets in it?
Design grading rubric HERE.

Have your name, class and period on the top of the document. Start with the Gather step, end with the Revisions step. That means you will only be listing 6 steps. Save this file as a PDF file. See me for help. Load the file on your assignment page under the title heading: Design Process. Use the FILE not the DOCUMENT element.
Or, you can base it on the one below.
This is one I developed for a web design class. Also applicable for graphic design. If you base your design process on this one there would be 4 steps, but each step has a little more info than the six step process.

DOW - 7up (Design of the week)
What is this design trying to get you to do?
What color theory or color theme do you see?
What decade do you thing it was made? Why?
Is this a balanced or unbalanced composition?
If it IS balanced, is it symmetrical, or asymmetrical?
When is the last time YOU had a 7up?
Why do they call it 7up?
Include a 3 inch copy of the design, the questions and answers in the DOW 5 section of your Weebly site.
Due the end of next week.

DOW - Purple (Design Of the Week)
What is this design trying to get you to do or think?
What color theory or color theme do you see?
Is this a balanced or unbalanced composition?
If it IS balanced, is it symmetrical, or asymmetrical?
Does it use serif or sans-serif fonts?
When would you use one (serif or sans-serif) over the other?
I don't know is not the correct answer. Do some research.

Things I look for when I grade this:
Is it proportionally similar to the original?
All elements placed in the correct place? (The eyes AREN'T in the center horizontally for instance, How much of the beak is covering the eyes, etc.)
Are the colors similar?
Did you include ALL of the shadows (people always forget the beak shadow : )
You Don't NEED the background color. Make the background whatever you think is appropriate.

Watch this about converting corner points to smooth points. Very helpful technique. Be sure to drag in the same direction as you did when you created the original shape. If you don't, the path will twist. I'll show you this in class. Hard to explain in words.

The Creative Process
Creativity - What is it and where do ideas come from? It's not magic. It's very simple - look at what other people do, take bits and pieces that you think are interesting, and put those things together in your own way.
John Lennon - Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite. Click HERE to hear the song. John saw the poster, took bits and pieces of the words to create the lyrics for the song.

So, what's the big takeaway? All artists come up with ideas the same way: painters, sculptures, filmmakers, songwriters, designers, photographers - any type of artist. They look at things that other artists do, put their own spin on the things they like, take a little bit of this from one thing(s), a little bit of that from another, and as things start to come together, look, listen, watch what you have, help it be what it want's to be. THAT'S where the magic happens. Easy peasy : )

Monday:
Julian Opie Assignment - Illustrator portrait in the style of Julian Opie. Find a headshot of an actor, sports person, anybody you are interested in. Place it in Illustrator and trace it. Be sure your artboard is letter size - 8.5 x 11. Your image needs to fill the artboard, no white space around the image. Watch the videos for additional info. You have to have hair highlights painted with a custom brush you make in Illustrator. The videos will show you how. Pay attention to the convert corner point trick. It will be helpful in other projects.
Part of his style is: circles for eyes, simple shapes for nostril holes, line for the middle of the mouth and line below the lip, highlights in hair. Those things need to be in your design. The goal is to do an illustration in HIS style not yours.

Welcome to the wonderful world of InDesign. It is made by the same people Photoshop and Illustrator. You will see a lot of similarities between the programs. Always make folders for your InDesign projects that contain the project file and and images or Illustrator files that you place in the InDesign document.

Text often has to flow through a variety of text boxes depending on the layout. Usually designers are given images and text in the form of a Word file. It is us to you to have the text flow through a variety of text boxes. Not a simple task UNLESS you know how to use the TEXT FLOW feature in InDesign.
This in called text threading in inDesign. Click thumbnail to see an example of how the text will flow in this particular design.
Text Threading Exercise - Make a 3 column document. Draw in 9 text boxes. Fill each text box with text from this document. You can copy and paste. The text needs to flow between the boxes. There can't be any missing words between the boxes. Don't put this on your website.

InDesign exercises - Practice these until you can do them without any help. When you take a class the goal is to LEARN things, not just TRY them. Taking notes is always a good idea.
1. Basic Flyer - Add a picture, headline text and body text, you know the drill, the same thing we did in Photoshop and Illustrator. The goal is to see what is the same and what's different about these 3 programs in the context of this exercise.
Tip: To resize a picture AFTER you place it in InDesign - Hold down, shift and command and drag a corner. Don't put your cursor in the center of the picture when you move it.
2. Threaded Text - Make multiple text boxes. Place threaded text in them. To view the threads go to: View, Extras. Show text threads.
3. Multi-page Document - Make a 5 page document. Type the words: Page 1, Page 2, Page 3 etc, in the center of each page.
4. Character Styles - Create and apply 3 different character styles to some text on a page in InDesign.
After you have applied them, change them in some way to see the magic.
5. Paragraph Styles - Create and apply 3 different paragraph styles to some text on a page in InDesign.
After you have applied them, change them in some way to see the magic.
6. Master Pages - Create and apply 3 different master page elements to the multi-page document you made above.
After you have applied them, change them in some way to see the magic.
7. Adding Page Numbers - Create 6 pages that are auto numbered.
From my graphic design notes (notes are good).
Adding Page Numbers in InDesign
Go to the master pages.
Drag a text box in the corner where you want the number to go. The text curser should be blinking in the box.
Go to TYPE>INSERT SPECIAL CHARACTER>MARKERS>CURRENT PAGE NUMBER
If you want it on both sides (you do), hold down OPTION, use the black selection tool, and drag a copy of that text box to the other side.
If the number is BEHIND an image on the page, go back to the master pages, create a new layer above the original layer, cut and past the number boxes on that layer.
Changing Where page #1 Starts (page 1 is never the cover, usually the second or third page is page 1). Make page 1 the first page after the cover and any ads.
Select page where you want 1 to be in pages panel
Go to pages menu items (stack of lines at top right of panel)
Uncheck ALLOW DOCUMENT PAGES TO SHUFFLE
Select NUMBERING AND SECTION OPTIONS
Select START PAGE NUMBERING
Type in 1, click OK.
If you see a number 1 on the cover still, drag the "NONE" master page to the cover page. It should make it go away. You cover image might already be covering it.

DOW - Choice 1 - Pick some graphic design that you like. Upload it to your website the same way you have been uploading the images I have been choosing.
Answer these questions about the design:
What is the design trying to get you to do?
Are the colors based on some color theory?
If it has text on it do you think the the designer has adjusted the leading, kerning, or tracking?
Are the fonts serif, sans-serif, or both?
What do you like about it?

Adding Images to InDesign - There are a few different ways to do this CORRECTLY. Both start with putting the image in the same folder as the InDesign file.
Method 1 - Open the image in Photoshop. Crop it to the size you want it to be at 250ppi. This is what we have been doing in Photoshop and Illustrator. The down side to this method is you need to know what size the image needs to be BEFORE it goes in InDesign.
Method 2 - Put a picture frame where the image will go (see illustration below to find frame tool). With the frame selected, go to FILE > PLACE. The picture will now be in the box, but it is probably WAY too big. To move it within the frame, grab the double circles (see illustration below) and drag it. To resize the picture to fit in the frame go to OBJECT>FITTING. Try the different options. The frame will act as a crop box This method is confusing at first but will give you the most options.
Click on thumbnail to see a larger version.

Method 3 - Go to go to FILE > PLACE. You will see a thumbnail image where your cursor is. If you left click, it will place the image the size that the image actually is. If you left click and drag, you can make it any size. This works fine if it is placed smaller than it actually is, but if you need to drag it larger, it will get ugly. Find a higher resolution image. To resize AFTER you place it, hold down SHIFT and COMMAND as you drag the corner.

10 Page Magazine Assignment - This is the biggest, most important assignment of the semester. Do a good job. Be sure your assignment has all of the requirements. They are listed below the example. This example is missing the master page elements. Be sure yours includes them.
Magazine Assignment sample by Teagan Horkan
10 Page Magazine Assignment
Requirements:
10 pages, 2 columns of threaded text on each page (except advertisements and cover), body text 12 points.
The magazine needs to be made with InDesign, the ads need to be made with Illustrator. You need to have thumbnail sketches of some sort BEFORE you start. An example HERE. More sketch examples: HERE, HERE, HERE. There are different ways to sketch your ideas. See me if you need help.
Include at least 2 advertisements made with Illustrator. These need to look like real ads for real products, not joke products. They should have something to do with the topic of your magazine. They should include NO placeholder text.
Create a NEW professional looking cover. The cover can be made in Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign.
At least 2 articles (title and at least one picture for each article). The titles for the articles will be on the magazine cover. Look at real magazine articles for layout ideas and article locations. Add 2 fake articles to the cover. This will make the cover look more realistic. To be clear: at least 4 articles on the cover.
Here for some good article layout ideas.
Be sure the first page of each article has a different layout, don't make them all the same.
Be sure you start with high resolution images.
Be careful using outlines on shapes and text. Also be careful using gradients.
Include page numbers via master pages except the cover and ads. Page one should be the second page of your magazine(watch the tutorial video or read the instructions above.).
At least one master page element on each page (page numbers don't count). Look at real magazines for ideas.
Use character styles ON ALL HEADLINE TEXT (except ads and cover). When you are finished I will ask you to change the article headings. It needs to be done with character styles. If it doesn't work you will need to redo them.
Some good info. HERE.
If you need to cut out some backgrounds - selecting tutorials: HERE and HERE.
The cover, advertisements, and article titles need to be real text, meaning real words that make sense, not filler text.
Article body text can be filler text.
Back cover needs to be an ad.
This needs to look professional, like a real magazine. Remember to use half inch text guides around the edges of pages and ads.
See me and ask questions if this isn't clear. The goal is not to be funny. The goal is to create a professional looking magazine. If I think what you are doing is inappropriate or unprofessional you will need to redo the assignment.
You can't use anything you have previously made in class.
How to start: Read the instructions. Pick a topic you are interested in. Research (Google) magazine articles and magazine spreads. Come up with professional looking design ideas - not the basic ideas we did on the exercise. Create thumbnail sketches for page. Click HERE for ideas. When in doubt, run the idea by me. Create the 10 page document, add placeholder descriptions of pages (I'll go over this is class) pick some article topics, find pictures that illustrate the article topics, think of at least 2 ad ideas. Find images for the ads. One of the ads will be on the back cover. Check with me frequently to be sure you are on track. Reread the instruction to ensure you are not leaving anything out.
This will go on your website in the assignment section as an interactive Flash assignment with page curl. Title it, you guessed it, Magazine.
Mr. P.
When in doubt, ask me for help, not the person next to you, they need to work.
Remember, I'm the art director, client, boss, and teacher all rolled into one. You are designing what I think is good, not what you think is good.
When you THINK you are done:

Animated GIF Assignment: Not required. Only do this if everything else is done. Create an animated GIF. Do something new and original. Something that is artistic and creative, NOT something that is funny or goofy. Check out the links below for different techniques. You can use images you find on the internet, but not other animated GIFs.
Some examples HERE.
Technique 1 The person in the video didn't make a new document. I would. Make it 1920px x 1080px resolution72. Copy and past your object(s) to that file.
Another video for technique 1 HERE. Another HERE. Others on the way.
Technique 2
When you are done, save it as a Photoshop file in case you want to make changes.
To get in on your website go to: FILE> SAVE FOR WEB. In the area at the top under PRESET be sure it says GIF. Now click save at the bottom. It should now be a GIF. To put the GIF on your Weebly site, use the IMAGE element, make the image file smaller, turn on lightbox, publish and test.
Some terms you might need to know about the process below:
Disposal Methods: (Dispose means, "get rid of").
Automatic
Determines a disposal method for the current frame automatically, discarding the current frame if the next frame contains layer transparency. For most animations, the Automatic option (default) yields the desired results.
Note:
To preserve frames that include transparency, select the Automatic disposal option when you are using the Redundant Pixel Removal optimization option.
Do Not Dispose
Preserves the current frame as the next frame is added to the display. The current frame (and preceding frames) may show through transparent areas of the next frame. Use a browser to see an accurate preview of an animation using the Do Not Dispose option.
Dispose
Discards the current frame from the display before the next frame is displayed. Only a single frame is displayed at any time (and the current frame does not appear through the transparent areas of the next frame).

About 25% to 50% of the population are introverts. School tends to favor the extroverts. There is nothing better or worse about being an introvert. Hopefully this video will help introverts and extroverts understand each other a little better. In the video the woman likes to read. All introverts don't necessarily read a lot. Some do other things like, art, music, writing, sports, play video games : )
Some famous introverts: Steve Wozniak, Tom Petty, Bill Gates, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Christina Aguliera.

Icon Assignment - Create 4 or more icons for a smart phone. You pick the aps. Can be designed in Illustrator OR Photoshop. If you use Photoshop you will need to design to a specific size. I'll put a little chart below that lists those sizes. If you use Illustrator ONLY (no pictures included) the size wont matter because vector graphics are scalable without losing any quality. Must be able to be "read" at a typical icon size. These need to be original designs. Don't just copy what someone else has done. Feel free to use a picture of an iPhone or other smart phone to display your icons but that isn't required. See examples below.
